Part of your Lexus suspension system is the Lexus power steering pump. Driven by a belt off the engine, the power steering pump is basically a vane style pump. The pump may use specialized power steering fluid or automatic transmission fluid. The prime purpose of the steering pump is to generate high pressure which is necessary to reduce the steering effort therefore easing the driver fatigue. In some cases, a variable assist power steering system is used. This provides more assist at low speeds and reduces assist at higher speeds. It also reduces over-steer in emergency situations and provides better “on-highway� feel.

The steering must not be held in the extreme right or left position for more than a few seconds when it is being turned as this could cause pump damage. As part of automotive care, you should always check your Lexus power steering fluid level at every oil change. It is advised that you use the type of power steering fluid as recommended in your manual. The steering drive belt must always be tight too. It is also important that the fluids are compatible with hoses and seals. You can possibly check the fluid level when your car is cold, but it's usually recommended to check the power steering fluid level with the car warmed-up.

These days, many late-model cars have a semi-transparent reservoir for power steering fluid. The reservoir's cap must be opened when there is no marking on the reservoir.
