The clutch is a crucial component of every vehicle such as your Lexus. The clutch, in a manual transmission is disengaged when the pedal is pressed down. Now, the pedal works the thrust pad and presses levers in the middle of the clutch cover. Meanwhile, the Lexus pressure plate is lifted away from the clutch plate while the flywheel turned by the crankshaft from the transmission shaft gets disconnected. The springs force the pressure plate and clutch plate against the flywheel when the pedal is lifted. It is then allowed by the clutch plate friction linings to slide before it gets engaged. The pressure plate contains clutch plate, springs, cover and release fingers.

The purpose of your Lexus pressure plate is already implied in its name - It applies pressure to the clutch disc necessary for the transfer of torque to the transmission. The pressure plate, when coupled with the clutch disc and flywheel, makes and breaks the flow of the power from the engine to the transmission. A common symptom that indicates a worn clutch is clutch chatter. But you should further perform an inspection since this symptom can also be caused by oil leaking from the engine onto the clutch assembly, a poor flywheel surface, damaged pressure plate release levers, a sprung clutch disc hub and improper alignment between the engine and transmission.
